Day 17–Hiking in the Alps

Today we were blessed by another good day of weather.  Each day here around Interlaken, the weather forecast has not looked so good, but we ended up having good weather.  Today, it was nice all day and when we got back into town is started to sprinkle.  Now at almost 11pm, it sounds like a good steady rain outside.

We were also recounting out thankfulness for hotels and not tent camping like we did in Italy 3 years ago.  It makes it so much easier to do laundry, write the blog, and unwind for the night. Plus, the kids have grown and I can’t figure out how we had 4 duffles, 4 backpacks, and 4 people in that tent…

This morning we got up and ate breakfast at the hotel and then headed down the street to the Gondola up to Grutschalp, a stop up above Lauterbrunnen where we are staying.  We then hiked south through Winteregg, Murren and on down to Gimmelwald before catching another gondola down to Stechelberg.  Then a bus 2km to Trummelbachfalle, then walk back to Lauterbrunnen.  We were gone from 10:30am until 5:30.

The hike gave us an idea of what mountain farming is like here in the Alps.  The gondolas are for moving goods as well as people.  There were mountain workers working on trees and trails.  There were cows along the paths and mountain roads.  There were cattle gates and steep inclines.  One of the signs said that most of the inclines were 80% – that is almost straight up!

A picture as soon as we got off the tram – up at Grutschalp

This is a picture of the village of Wengen across the pass – I suppose this is where they use to yodel to and from!

This is how all the travel happens up here.  Trains and cables.

Before we even got to Winteregg, Jack needed to swap shoes with me. His feet were jammed into the shoes he brought – I think he grew while we have been gone.  I took the ones he had, and he took my running shoes.

It was fun to hear the cowbells on the cows and see them all in the path on our hike.

In the village of Murren, there was a large chess set out in a common area.  Jessica was the queen, and Jack was a pawn.

Of course, Kim and I had to be King and Queen…

Cheese ball!  Jessica was “high-fiving” all the grass.  I told her the grass was so excited to see her!

I am still crazy for my beautiful bride of 20 years!

The falls were really cool – waterfalls inside the mountain!

Tonight there was a little Folklore concert at the town square, and it started with these guys walking up the street with their large cowbells.  Jack called it “Lawrence Welk Swiss Style!!”

Tomorrow we leave the beautiful country of Switzerland and head to France.

Good night!
