Today we had to get up and get out of the hotel to get to our castle tours Kim had set up for us. It was a chilly overcast morning, upper 50’s and we had our day-pack with us handling all of the rain jackets.
We arrived and parked and started our first of many uphill climbs…just to get to the ticket office.
The famous castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenscmhwangau are located near the town (about a 5 minute drive);
Descriptions below from wikipedia: (photos from the Whitlock Camera)
Hohenschwangau Castle or Schloss Hohenschuangau (lit: High Swan County Palace) is a 19th century palace in southern Germany. It was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. It is located in the German village of Hohenschwangau near the town of Füssen, part of the county of Ostallgäu in southwestern Bavaria, Germany, very close to the border with Austria.
Neuschwanstein Castle (German: Schloss Neuschwanstein, pronounced [nɔʏˈʃvaːnʃtaɪn]) is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner. Contrary to common belief[citation needed], Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and extensive borrowing, not with Bavarian public funds (see below).
This castle is the one Walt Disney modeled Cinderella’s Castle at Disney World in Orlando after.
After seeing the castles, we hiked about 45 minutes into the woods to a restaurant that can only be accessed on foot. We did however find out they had a shuttle once we got up there. It was a long hard walk, mostly uphill on the way there. We were going to take the shuttle back, but decided to walk it. The kids were real troopers as it was a lot of strenuous walking today.
Jack found a pet snail along the way. He threatened to eat it, but we wouldn’t let him.

During the day we took some fun family photos:
Jack “photo-bombed” Kim today by jumping in front of the camera while she was trying to take a picture of the castle.
These are pictures of our room.
Jack and Jessica are hanging out of the 2nd floor window on the right side of the hotel.
Tomorrow we have a long day of travel as we leave Germany and head through Austria and Lichtenstein to Switzerland.
Thursday I am going hang-gliding (in a tandem with an experienced pilot!)
