Day 5 – THE WEDDING

Today we got up about 10am, and just hung out at Noble House until it was time to leave for the wedding.  It was nice to have a “down time” to recuperate from the first 4 days.  We had a “snacky lunch” of twix, snickers, potato chips, chocolate, trail mix and fresh cherries as our fruit group.

Our “snacky lunch” before the wedding.

Alin came and picked us up and took us to the wedding by 3:30pm.  The wedding started at 4pm.  It was a little different.  Noticeable changes from our weddings:

  • No “bride side, groom side” in the church.  We sat anywhere.
  • Teo was out still giving instructions right before the wedding began.
  • There was no processional, the bridesmaids and Teo and the groomsmen walked in to some music and then Tunde walked in with her father.
  • Teo and Tunde sat in front of the church during the service while the wedding party sat in the front row.
  • There were multiple sermons and songs
  • The service lasted 1 and half hours.

Then to the reception:

Some noticeable differences and fun things at the reception were:

  • They had the guest book go around the room during the reception so everyone could write notes and well-wishes in it.  It was nice to have the time to do this, instead of just writing your name in the book as we do.
  • The has some fun games during the reception…they called them games.  The first was where they had 12 guys come up out of the group that were Teo and Tunde’s peers.  They had a leader call out something specific they had to get from the audience and bring it back up front.  Sunglasses, ladies purse, men’s sock, shoestring, keys, lipstick, etc.  The last one back with the item got to promise Teo and Tunde something for the month they were on…Item #1=January, Item #2=February, etc.  So for Feb, as and example, the guy had to say, I will take you to a steak dinner on valentines day.  May is Teo’s birthday, so that guy had to promise to take them out for that.  It was really fun.
  • There was another funny skit that involved me, Ghita, Tunde’s dad and a couple other friends….but it is too long to tell by typing….
  • Finally, Teo and Tunde had done a video this last week or so that was played before the cake was brought out.  It was shot around town, in the fields, playgrounds, on a pier on a lake, nice places.  They were telling about how they met, playing together, playing in the rain, and at the end they had a special message for each other that neither had seen before.  It was really well done and very cool at the reception.

The reception lasted until 12:30am when we all left.  It is now 2am and only Peter Bick and I remain up.  Peter was the photographer for the wedding and shot about 2,000 pictures.

Oh, one more thing that was really cool at the reception…ok, a couple more:

  • Pictures outside between courses of the meal with everyone there.  They had everyone come out and get their pictures with Teo and Tunde, some really funny ones too.
  • There were about 6 courses to the meal:
    • Appetizers – schnitzel was the meat here, it was like cold chicken strips to which Jack said “no offense to the chef, but the chicken is really cold!”
    • Coffee
    • Soup – like a chicken noodle without the chicken, only Romanian noodles
    • Cabbage Wraps – forget the Romanian name.  Meat wrapped in cabbage and boiled?  I had one.  Kim and Jessica tried a bite.
    • Main course – meat – chicken and pork, mashed potatoes, gravy with mushrooms
    • Dessert – the handed out individual plastic containers with various cakes and treats
    • Wedding cake

OK – now with some pictures.

DSC_1894 There was a “hold-up” at the wedding!

DSC_1899 They did not “steal the bride tonight…which is a tradition to hold her for ransom from the groom.  This was a close as they got.

DSC_1901 Teo didn’t even have time to stop and go to the restroom, he just did what other Romanians do, he stopped where he was a took care of it. (ok this was staged)

Tomorrow it is off to church, if we can wake up in time, then lunch at House 6, then off to Brasov (6-8 hours by van).

Sorry for the type-o’s  no proof reading at this hour.
