Day 16 – HellBrunn Palace and Golling Waterfall

This was our last full day in the Salzburg area and the weather was perfect!  It was in the 70’s all day, clear blue sky, and a light breeze.  Probably doesn’t get much better this side of heaven.

We ate breakfast at the hotel, and headed in to Hellbrunn Palace at the south end of Salzburg.  This was the summer residence of the Arch Bishop of Salzburg in the 1600’s.  He was born and raised in Italy and loved water fountains and gadgetry.

Our first tour was of the trick fountains.  Jessica and Jack got a little wet as the tour guide was full of surprises.

This was a group of kids that volunteered to sit at the table for the demonstration.  There were 3 rules:

  • Hands on the table
  • No moving
  • Always smile, no matter what

The kids seats all had sprayers in them, so they all got wet seats.  The head of the table was reserved for the Arch Bishop and his did not have a sprayer.  Back in those times, no one was allowed to get up from the table before him.

Everything we saw was powered by water:

There were  multiple grottos on the tour and this one was the bird song grotto, where they used water to make it sound like birds were singing.

Jessica and Jack are standing in front of a complete scene powered by water that had 300+ hand carved figures of which 230 moved.  This was 400 years old too.

Outside Hellbrunn Palace.  This was a stop on this last season of the Amazing Race!  We re-enacted that this week too. DSC_2447

After the tours of the palace and the trick fountains, we went to a playground to let Jack run for a while.  He really enjoyed it.

Next Stop:  Grolling Waterfall, by way of a supermarket to get a picnic lunch.

We found a MaxiMarket, which was their version of a Super Wal-mart.  We did not go to the second floor, but the food stuff took up the entire first floor.  We each had a fruit, Orange, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Apple, and Cherries. The kids had drinking yoghurt.  We all got sandwiches from the deli – they were great.  We also got some Pringles and found some peanuts…we were laughing at this one because we have not really been able to find any good nuts.  This store had a big jar of AMERICAN PEANUTS!!! we thought we hit the jackpot.  I also had a bottle of Ottkinger beer.

Our picnic…

The view from our picnic:

This was a HUGE waterfall.  See Jack in the bottom of the picture (Above)!

Behind Kim the water is pounding into a hole from up above.  It was very loud.  This is up above the waterfall you saw before.

This was the panoramic view from the top of the bridges over the waterfalls.  This was looking back east over the valley where Golling was. DSC_2521

We used the GorillaPod to hold the camera on the railing of this bridge to take this photo.  This was near the top of the fall, and when we went all the way up, it looked like the water was coming out of a cave in the side of the mountain.

Can you believe it will be 17 years this August!!  Still very much in love!

This church on a little hill in this valley was very cool in the afternoon light. DSC_2554

When we got done with the picnic and the hike we headed back to town.  Kim and Jessica went shopping and Jack and I went and did some more exploring up behind town to the east.  This was a little chapel we found on our hike.  Jack does not know what Buddhism is, but thinks the meditation “pose” is funny.

We met back up in town around 5:30.  We let the kids take the keys to the hotel and head back without us for about 20 minutes.  It was less than a block away and they thought that was pretty cool.

We finished the day with a dinner on our main street here.  It was very good, and a nice way to finish our time here.  Tomorrow is a huge travel day.  Return the car, grab a train, head to Innsbruck, change trains, head to Venice, grab a Vaporetto (water taxi) through Venice, back on land and hopefully grab a bus to our campground so we don’t have to walk the 2km.

Hopefully, we will have internet access at our campground that is not too inconvenient. Auf Weidersehen!
